On the Summer Drawing Board...
Up to the usual no-good this summer... creating contemporary adaptations of AESOP'S FABLES for an upcoming volume of The Graphic Canon... here's a taste of the work in progress...
In addition to the obscure THE LION IN LOVE, I'm retelling the sour tale of THE FOX AND THE GRAPES Tabloid-style, and THE CITY MOUSE AND THE COUNTRY MOUSE against the unlikely backdrop of the Russian Mafia.
For Eureka's Graphic Classics, I'm having a ball illustrating Joe R. Lansdale's scary DOG, CAT, and BABY, about a homicidal housecat. How great to be adapting a living author for a change!
I finally got the go-ahead for my graphic biography of the genius THELONIUS MONK, written by David Berger and published by Duke University Press. it'll run between 120-140 pages, and here's another taste to whet the whistle.
There's plenty more to tell, but I'll leave it at that, for now... have a great summer!
The poetry of Chicagoan Gwendolyn Brooks, I've admired since I was a kid... but I only became aware of her short & sweet 'Narcissa' (written before I was born, probably) about a year after completion of my graphic novel. Her description of the child, blissfully alone, is a comfortable match with how I see Narcissa. And now she's gone home for a visit.

Hard for me to imagine that it's been twenty-two years since my first time in Spain, more than thirteen since I came here to live. Three years since I've been home to New York and a full decade since I published a full length original graphic novel. I've created a ton of short pieces for various anthologies over the past thirteen years, mostly biographical pieces and mildly unnecessary adaptations of literary classics, and it's not quite what I'd hoped to have accomplished by now, to be honest. With years comes the inevitable decline in health and vigor, accompanied by a wisdom acquired through lessons learned, or so I'm told.A gallery setting really isn't my natural habitat. I've always loved drawing and telling stories, with the goal of eventual publication. I love the look, smell & feel of a printed book, the unique qualities of digital work notwithstanding. I'm able to hide it fairly well, but I'm truly a fish out of water when called up…
